Picking the right time to gamble is important

Picking the right time to gamble is importantIdeally, you want to get your money in the pot in a no-limit Texas hold 'em tournament when you have an opponent dominated, but that isn't always possible.

Sometimes your stack will be below average, you will draw a nice hand, even if it isn't the best, and you will see a big pot brewing. You have to gamble.

It happens to the top players all the time. They don't always like it, but one part of their strategy is to pick a smaller stack to gamble with so they can't bust out, as Josh Arieh showed at the $15,000-buy-in Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic at Las Vegas' Bellagio in 2007.

With blinds at $500-$1,000 plus a $100 ante, the player under the gun limped, as did pro Marcel Luske and two other players.

Arieh, who finished third in the 2004 World Series of Poker main event, found ace-queen offsuit on the button. He also found a chance to make a move to improve his below-average stack of about $24,000.

Aggression pays off for top player

Aggression pays off for top playerMost of the top poker players advocate aggressive play in tournaments because you need to amass chips to win, and top poker players are looking to win, not just get into the money.

They point out that aggressive play gives you two chances to take down a pot: Your opponent might fold, or you might have the best hand.

But sometimes simply calling a big bet when you have position on an opponent can be just as intimidating and profitable.

At the World Poker Tour's $15,000-buy-in Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic at Las Vegas' Bellagio in 2007, with blinds at $200-$400 plus a $500 ante, Johnny Chan drew K-7 suited on the button, the most powerful position in the game after the flop because every opponent must act before you.

With a big stack that allowed him to play a wider range of starting hands, Chan called a raise to $1,200 by a player in middle position. Heads-up, the two players took a flop of 9-8-3, two diamonds.

'Life on Tilt' a story about choices

John Blowers of Charlton is a human resources manager at General Electric, father of twin 7-year-old boys and a 4-year-old daughter, a member of the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake school board, a member of Junior Achievement of Northeastern New York board, an active church member and occasional poker player. This week, he adds “author” to his resume as he releases his novel “Life on Tilt: Confessions of a Poker Dad,” a work of fiction drawn from some of his own experiences.

The book isn’t a primer on the game, nor is it intended to encourage people to take the risks associated with gambling, but, instead, Blowers chronicles the choices adults make between the realities of family life and the dreams of making it big.

“Everyone has dreams and ambitions that, if left unexplored, would leave us unfulfilled, but if explored too thoroughly, could jeopardize everything else we hold dear,” Blowers said. “It’s a delicate balance. In the book, I use poker as a telescope to explore this universal tension, and the game is used throughout the novel as a catalyst for conflict and ultimate change.”

Kid Poker : Try playing more hands in smaller pots

Kid Poker : Try playing more hands in smaller pots There are a couple of methods to amass a big stack in tournament poker. One way is to try pushing small edges before the flop by playing coin-flip situations, like a pair versus two overcards, or vice versa. The problem is that this approach is far too inconsistent. You'll need lots of luck to get your side of the coin to repeatedly flip in your favor.

A better approach to build a sizable chip stack is to play more hands in smaller pots. This method is based on mathematical theory, not just random luck or pure aggression. Here's an extreme example to illustrate my point.

The blinds are 400-800 with a 100 ante. With nine players at the table, 2,100 chips are in the pot before the cards are dealt.
Now, let's assume that you and one other opponent play wildly; one of you will raise to 2,000 before the flop on every single hand. The other players are very tight and will enter the pot about 10 percent of the time. The only time you or the other maniac will fold pre-flop is when one of the tight players also raises before the flop.
Furthermore, assume that when only you and the other crazy player are in the pot, neither of you will bet after the flop, turn, or river. Theoretically, each of you should win 50 percent of the pots. However, when any tight player enters the pot, you would each play your normal game, playing hands that have value, and betting as you normally would.

This situation isn't actually that far-fetched and commonly plays out in some of the bigger buy-in events on the professional tour. Just watch when Gus Hansen and Phil Ivey are seated at the same table. You'll notice that most of the hands played are contested between these two poker greats. They won't necessarily play big pots, but they'll definitely get involved in most of the smaller ones — unless a tight player shows aggression before the flop.

Let's get back to the example.

VIP: Very Important Pokerplayer

VIP: Very Important Pokerplayer"Poker players are the new sporting heroes."

Top players earn a lot of money and from all sides the are being pampered : Adventure rides on speed-boats, helicopter flights, luxury hotels, haute cuisine and prize money of millions of dollars, the stakes are high in the poker world.

For example, take the poker tournament that was recently organised by 888.com. For the prize pool they spended a smashing total of 3 million dollars. At the online portion of the tournament more then 2,200 poker players from around the world attended the game.

You could buy a direct ticket for the head tournament for a 1.000 dollars, but you could also qualify through several preliminary rounds on the Internet. Eventually the ten best places from the tournament are placed for the final, which was finished in the live chic casino of the jet set village Peralada (about 80 miles from Barcelona). For the winner of this final there was one million dollars ready making it the tournament with the highest amount of prize money in Europe.

The finalists were four Canadians, a Pole, an Italian,
a German and ... three Dutchmen: Bert van Doesburg (23) from Opijnen, Bart Wetsteijn (26) from Middelburg and Bjorn van Bavel (24) from Riel : Doesburg finished sixth and earned 90000 dollars, Wetsteijn was fifth and that earned him 120,000 dollars, while Van Bavel for his fourth place an amount of 180,000 dollars was credited. That's a great achievment for boys who all still in college or only just graduated (Wetsteijn).

Great Dane's pocket fives vs Kid Poker's pocket sixes

Great Dane's pocket fives vs Kid Poker's pocket sixesIn poker, there are some hands that will be remembered forever. Chris Moneymaker’s legendary bluff versus Sammy Farha. Joseph Hachem flopping the nut straight against Steve Dannenmann. Chris Ferguson spiking a nine on the river versus T.J. Cloutier to win the 2000 WSOP Main Event.

Recently on “Steve Dannenmann” (a poker program on GSN), two current greats - Gus Hansen (aka the Great Dane) and Daniel Negreanu (aka Kid Poker) - locked horns in a hand that is still being discussed among players.

To set the scene, the star-studded table also included Doyle Brunson, Barry Greenstein and Antonio Esfandiari playing in a high-stakes cash game made for television.

The blinds were set at $300 and $600 with antes at $100. Sitting under the gun, Hansen was dealt 5d-5c and raised to $2,100. Sitting immediately to Hansen’s left, Kid Poker looked down at 6s-6h and decided to raise to $5,000. After each of the remaining players folded (Antonio Esfandiari made a nice fold from the big blind holding Ad-Qc), Hansen tossed in another $2,900, making the call. Now, they both awaited the flop.

9c-6d-5h.
